Tôi thắc mắc.
Đã từng trải qua biết bao nhiêu mối tình với chổi quét nhà, ở chúng có một điểm chung rất chi là đặc trưng và mang tính hiển nhiên: góc nghiêng.
Chung quy, có 6 loại chổi chính :
Tiêu chuẩn
Chổi ngô
Chổi đẩy
Chổi cao su
Chổi nước
Chổi góc nghiêng (loại mà người Việt chúng ta dùng hằng ngày (aka "Chổi đót", và cũng là nhân vật chính của chúng ta trong tập đầu tiên của TheDesignOfEverydayThings)

Một hồi quan sát, cảm nhận, tôi nhận thấy thiết kế này mang đến 2 lợi ích chính:
Quét góc hẹp
Yếu tố này rất quan trọng. Với những loại chổi không có góc nghiêng, để quét được các góc, ví dụ như hầm bàn có độ cao từ đất thấp, ta phải cuối người mới có thể luồng chổi xuống được. Với chổi đót, nó sẽ giúp ta vừa đứng vừa có thể để nó luồng vào hầm.
Vị trí cánh tay sẽ thoải mái hơn khi quét.
Có 2 ý nhỏ cho lợi ích này.
Đầu tiên là tư thế quét. Khi cầm chổi 1 tay, ta tạo 1 góc với sàn nhà. Vậy nếu chổi không có góc nghiêng, chỉ một phần đầu chổi chạm đến sàn. Ngược lại với chổi đót, vì góc nghiêng khiến đầu chổi dài ra, toàn bộ đầu chổi sẽ tiếp xúc với sàn, giúp ta quét được nhiều diện tích hơn
Thứ 2, cá nhân tôi cho rằng, lý do chổi đót phổ biến đặc biệt với người Việt, là do thân hình thấp bé của chúng ta. Việc cầm một chiếc chổi đót bằng 1 tay để quét, thì có cao hay lùn đến mấy, vẫn không có vấn
đề gì. Nhưng nếu phải cầm các loại chổi không có góc như thế, với 2 tay, thì đó là 1 loại hình khổ sở khác.

I wonder.
I've been through so many relationships with this floor sweeping tool, I realize one unique and obvious thing of this object: an angle.
In general, there are 6 main types of broom:
Standard
Corn (a more modern version of the Standard)
Push
Rubber
Water
Angle (the familiar type to Vietnamese families on the daily basis, aka "Chổi đót", and it's also the main character of our 1st episode of TheDesignOfEverydayThings series)

With a little observation, feelings, I realize there are 2 main benefits of this design:
Sweep small spaces
This is an important pros. With those brooms which don't have angles, to efficiently sweep the small spaces, say the table cellar with a height that is not too large from the ground, you have to bend your back down to fit the broom it that space. Meanwhile, with the angle broom, we can easily do that while standing.
More comfortable position while sweeping.
There are 2 main ideas for this one
Firstly, the sweeping position. When holding the broom by 1 hand, we create an angle with the floor. So if the broom doesn't have angle, only 1 part of the broom's head can contact with the floor. On the other hand, since the angle of angle broom makes the length of the broom's head longer, all the space of the broom's head will contact completely with the floor, helping us sweep over larger spaces of the floor.
Secondly, I assume that the reason why angle broom (aka "chổi đót") is so popular for Vietnamese families is because of our small and short body. Holding this kind of broom in 1 hand to sweep the floor, no matter you're tall or short, will be easy like a peace of cake. But it's a different story when we hold a standard broom to sweep the floor, as we have to hold it by 2 hands, for more efficiency.
